Building Sustainability Strategies for China

This Thursday, we continued our Sustainability Speech Series by hosting a talk on the topic of “Foreign enterprises: Building Sustainability Strategies in China” at Shanghai University.

To help students gain a better understanding about the topic, we invited Charis Yang,General Manager of Vendor Compliance & Sustainability at Li & Fung; Super Wang, Supply Chain Sustainability Manager for Asia, Middle East and Africa at ABB; and Jiayu Wan, Cluster Environment Director for Greater China at Tetra Pak, to share their insights of their respective companies’ strategies in China.

All of the speakers have substantial experience in the field. Charis is an experienced compliance professional with expertise in risk management, ethical sourcing, and sustainable manufacturing improvement. Super has 10 years of experience in the area of sustainability and responsible sourcing and has previously held a regional sustainability manager role for a British fast fashion retailer. Before Tetra Pak, Jiayu had experience working for WWF as Programme Development and Communications Manager and for companies including Gillette (China), American Standard, and Carpigiani Trading.

Speaking in front of international as well as Chinese students at the School of Economics, Shanghai University, Charis talked about the factors that are driving the changes for sustainable business and how Li&Fung has been part of the solution. Super shared ABB’s sustainability objectives and strategies, its achievements, challenges and opportunities forward. Jiayu talked about Tetra Pak’s strategy of driving environmental excellence and creating sustainable growth, and how they have managed to grow their business while minimizing the environmental impact.

The speeches were followed by a brief Q&A session, which allowed students to engage with the speakers and deepen their understanding of foreign enterprise’ role in promoting sustainable development in China.
